How it all Began.

It all started in 1991, whilst involved with a local children’s charity called the Make a Wish Foundation, I decided to stage a pantomime with the aim to raise money for the charity. I found a director called Cherie Peppit and between us we choose Cinderella. I rounded up all my friends and we held an audition. The cast were mainly first timers, looking for some enjoyment whilst working towards a good cause. We rehearsed for 12 weeks and put on an excellent performance and raised £2,200. The show was so well received by our audience that we set up a drama group by the name of The Make a Wish Drama Society.

From there we recruited more actors and actresses, technical and back stage workers. We staged a pantomime every year, raising money for the charity. We used the money to sponsor the children’s wishes, and this was known as adopting a wish. After a couple of years of pantomime we decided to add summer plays into our programme, which were brilliant successes.

After five years of performing, we as a group decided we would like to donate our money to other local charities outside Make A Wish so we left the charity and formed a new company in its own right trading as the Starburst Theatre Company.

Starburst carried on performing excellent shows, each year better than the last; we started to stage musical revues, which again were a huge success. If all that wasn’t enough we also started to enter theatre festivals, based in Rushmore. This was both exciting and satisfying. A new time was upon us. Not only have we passed the 10 year stage but also in 2001 we staged our first musical.

Looking back over all the years I have some very fond memories, made some very good friends, done things that I only dreamed I would, but most importantly I have been part of a company that has raised thousands of pounds for local charities.

I personally would like to thank each and every one of members past and present and all of our audience for their support over the years.

Pete Woodford.
